Nothing soothes me like some quality time viewing my friend Helene’s photographs. When I’m having a rough day, I like to make a cup of coffee, get cozy under a blanket and pull up her site. I find her writing and photos lovely, calming and honest.
Helene’s book Plate to Pixel was released this week and she hit the ground running. In my opinion she’s a genius at using the light to create stunning photographs. Of course, I’m a bit biased. Not only is she a close friend, she also shot all the food photography in my cookbook.
Plate to Pixel inspires with gorgeous photographs and eloquent chapters explaining how to use natural light, how to work with your camera’s modes and settings, telling a story with your photography, food styling techniques and much more. Helene’s a very approachable teacher – no question is too simple for her. Throughout the book, she guides the reader with simple steps to improve photography and styling skills.
I’ve learned so much about photography from Helene. For years, I knew I wanted to learn how to really use a camera, but only began earnestly practicing a couple of years ago. One of the most important things I learned from her is to watch the light. It can make or break a photo. She told me to set up my camera next to the window where I planned to take photos and snap one every hour, testing to see when the light shines in the best.
I yearn to improve my food styling. Now, with her book in my hands, I only have to use my imagination and practice.
To celebrate the arrival of Plate to Pixel, I’m giving away a copy! Leave a comment below in order to enter. To gain an extra entry, head over to Facebook and become a fan of Deliciously Organic. The giveaway ends Tuesday, 3 May 2011 at 11:59pm. Contest open to US states only. One name will be selected using random.org and be contacted. The winner has 3 days to respond before being disqualified, in which case a new winner will be chosen. Good luck!
