How to Detox After an Amalgam Filling Removal

Don’t be cavalier about removing an amalgam filling. I learned that lesson the hard way back in 2008! I went to a dentist who wasn’t trained to take the proper precautions and ended up very sick. It took me several years to recover.

Having a seemingly simple filling removal ruin my health made me very passionate about educating others regarding safe dentistry.

How to Detox After Amalgam Filling Removal

Most people don’t realize amalgam fillings are actually about 50% mercury. Since anything above 0 parts per billion (ppb) of mercury is toxic, it’s imperative to take proper precautions when removing these fillings. I’m not going to go into the details of off-gassing or why removing amalgams is important in this post, so if you’d like to read more on these topics, click here or here.

Before you get your mercury amalgams removed, here are some important things to consider:

  • Is the dentist properly trained to safely remove amalgam filings? I recommend the IAOMT website, IABDM website, DAMS website, or Consumers for Dental Choice website – all great places to search for a dentist in your area. The closest dentist may be a couple of hours away, but we think it’s worth the drive to see someone who’s properly trained. We personally go to Dr. Pfister at Biodentist Alabama in Dothan, AL. It’s a two hour drive each way, but worth it for us to know we’ll be healthy when we walk out the door.
  • When you find a dentist you think is a good fit, call their office and talk to them about the precautions they take during the removal. Keep in mind that just because a dentist says he’s “holistic” doesn’t necessarily mean he will align with your desires. It’s important to talk about the precautions they plan to take for your safety and the safety of the dental staff.
  • The precautions should include:
    a. A rubber dam should isolate the tooth with a thin piece of latex, so the particles of the toxic metals being drilled out don’t mix with your saliva and become absorbed into the gums or swallowed.
    b. Oxygen for the patient, to reduce inhalation of airborne particles.
    c. The dentist should remove the filling in chunks, using the drill only as much as absolutely necessary.
    d. Both low and high-speed drills to remove the last bits of amalgam from the tooth to minimize the risk of killing the tooth.
    e. The dentist or assistant should spray on the tooth throughout the procedure to keep the tooth cool.
    f. A vacuum to trap and remove toxic metal particles.
    g. Masks for the dentist and assistant to protect them from mercury vapor. If the dental staff doesn’t wear masks to protect themselves, then you know you’re in the wrong place!
    h. Glasses for the patient, dentist and assistant.
    i. A well ventilated office with a vacuum hose to draw the mercury vapor and particles away from the patient and dental staff, with proper disposal.
  • Talk to the dentist or staff about the dental materials they will use to fill the tooth, create a crown, inlay, the kind of anesthetic, etc.
  • Ask about the price of the filling and see how much your insurance will cover. Often, insurance companies won’t cover the full cost because they think this is an unnecessary procedure. The procedure often isn’t cheap, but knowing what I know now, I would have gladly saved up and paid $1,000 to have my filling removed years ago. It would have been far cheaper than what I ended up spending to get my health and life back!
  • I know in our society, it’s not “normal” to walk into a doctor’s office with a list of questions and preferred methods of treatment, but don’t be afraid to speak up. Biologically trained and holistic dentists are used to this – they will welcome your questions. In fact, when I first called Dr. Pfister, he talked to me for half an hour about the exact methods he uses to practice safe dentistry. That’s the kind of doctor I want to work with!
How to Detox After an Amalgam Filling Removal

How to Detox After the Mercury Amalgam Filling Removal

It’s imperative you do a dental detox after the filling removal even when you go to a dentist who’s properly trained because some vapors or particles can still enter the body despite the dentist’s best efforts. Using the right supplements and diet can help the body quickly eliminate these toxins so they don’t take residence in your tissues and cause problems.

This is the dental detox protocol we use for our clients at Biodynamic Wellness. Before you get your fillings out, email or call our office – we can ship all these supplements to you (except for the cilantro oil*). The protocol takes place the day of and the six months following the removal of mercury amalgam fillings and other toxic metals.

  1. Pure Radiance C – This non-GMO vitamin C is derived from organic and wild berries. It acts as a powerful antioxidant for the body during the detox. Take one capsule at breakfast and another at dinner for six months.
  2. BioSuperfood – This supplement contains spirulina and algae for immune system support. Take one pill at breakfast and another at lunch for the first five days. Thereafter, take one pill at breakfast for six months.
  3. Quinton Hypertonic or Isotonic – These vials of deep sea water help replace minerals displaced by mercury fillings.
  4. Organic Sulfur – Sulfur enhances mercury detox.
  5. Cilantro Essential Oil – Cilantro helps remove heavy metals from the body. It’s imperative you only use a brand of essential oil you know for certain is completely pure. We trust and recommend doTERRA essential oils.

Foods to Eat During the Dental Detox:
The diet should be free of all processed foods, sugar, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners. We recommend our clients follow the Foundational Food Plan, available to you when you purchase the supplements from our office, which includes vegetables, pastured meats, eggs, raw dairy, fermented foods, properly prepared nuts, seeds, legumes and grains, plenty of water, and healthy fats (like butter, ghee, coconut oil, duck fat, lard, tallow, etc).

Other Detox Therapies:
Karack’s Oil Treatment – Hold a mouthful of unrefined sesame oil (from a dark bottle) in your mouth for 3-10 minutes, intermittently swishing it around, “chewing it,” and gargling. When you can’t hold it any longer (without serious drooling!), spit it out. Then gargle and rinse with salt and baking soda, and brush your teeth  Do this treatment daily for 3-6 months after all amalgams have been removed. The change in oil color from golden to white as well as the change of texture from thick to thin you’ll notice upon spitting out the oil indicates the degree of lipophilic (fat-loving) toxic chemicals, metals, and microbes that have been absorbed into the oil from the oral mucosa, as well as throughout the entire body as the blood circulates through the oral mucosa. Environmentally sensitive individuals particularly like the chemical-clearing effects of Dr. Karack’s Ayurvedic sesame oil treatment.

Near Infrared Sauna – The sweating promotes elimination of toxic chemicals, radioactive particles and other toxins. It also increases the skin’s ability to eliminate poisons.

What proof do you have that these suppliments remove mercury from your body? Do you have data from before and after blood tests from a large population of people? I had 3 metal fillings removed a year ago without any of those precaution methods and was fine afterwards. I remember them using a lot of water and suction but there was no ventilation or extra oxygen. They wore masks but nothing with ventilation. I’m just curious, thanks for the info. I’m going to get three more removed in a couple days from the same dentist and TTC so this info makes me anxious.

Our practice is a modest practice and not a large hospital with a research staff, so we do not have data from a large population of people. We've seen great results using this detox program with our clients. As someone who walked through this personally, I highly recommend you consider going to a dentist who takes all of the proper precautions.

thank you for this great info! i'm so scared of the mercury and detox. i'm thinking of just removing the entire tooth to avoid the mishap with mercury. What are your thoughts on pulling out the entire tooth and getting a toxin free fake tooth as opposing to keeping the tooth and removing the mercury fillings? Thank you!!

That is my question as well. I have one mercury amalgam filling and I might just take it out. I guess I'll talk over my options with my dentist. I'm going to tr Pfister in Dothan AL too. I'm glad you like him, I can better rest at ease. My young daughter had 4 taken out without me even knowing and not even a biological dentist. Shes had no problems she knows of. I wonder if later they will show up or if some of her aches that she says comes from her work or maybe shes just fine!? I'm going to keep studying on this. Ann

At the age of 73 years I have just had the last of my amalgam filled teeth out. I have had a dental plate for many years with teeth being added to it. Now to your question. (1) I never wanted to have a filling removed. (2) IF - an implant had been an option years ago, I would have saved and gone down the route of:- tooth out - implant in. Good Luck.

Hi, I'm fairly certain that when my mercury fillings were removed and changed to composite (I had many) they were not taken out properly. That was 8 years ago and after I had them out I developed seasonal migraines (don't know if it was related). The headaches are better now. Is there anything I can do now to detox from metals since it was so long ago. Thanks!

Very interesting article. My husband had all his removed by a holistic dentist, recommended by our holistic doctor. Shortly thereafter he got a horrible rash under his wedding ring. Of course I research that, and it's called "wedding ring rash" but really nothing explains why this would suddenly happen after wearing for 7 years. I have wondered if his body is toxic from the mercury, and the addition of the metal ring is an overload. He tried again to wear his ring after a break for several months and the same rash appeared. So I wonder if heavy metal overload could be the problem.

While I don't have proof, I think your theory is correct. His body was trying to clear the heavy metals and his body was "rejecting" the ring because there was an overload in his system. I actually had this same thing happen to me. When it did, I didn't wear my ring and for the next few months, I ate as clean as possible making sure to get plenty of fat-soluble vitamins from animal foods to help keep my detox pathways open, used a homeopathic remedy and some specific supplements that we used for our clients to open the detox pathways in the liver, did castor oil packs over my liver each day and also spent 20-30 minutes in the sauna several times a week. After a few months, I put the ring back on and never had a problem since!

HI - a couple of questions please: I had my fillings replaced some years ago but these precautions were not taken. I had them replaced with 'white ones'. Q: do white fillings contain mercury? Q: if mercury entered my body during the process is it still likely to be there? If so, can I do anything to try and get it out now?!!

The "white" ones do not contain mercury, but often will contain some kind of heavy metal. If you're concerned about the materials they used for your filling, you could call the doctor's office to find out exactly what they used and then look at the "clean" dentistry list provided in the post above to see if the filling they used is on the list. If you didn't do any kind of detox after the removal, then there's a good chance the mercury settled in various tissues in the body. I recommend doing the detox protocol listed above for 6 months. You can call our office and we can send all of the supplies you will need.

I have the same problem. I went for a filling a few days ago and she removed the amalgam and replaced with a white filling. I even asked her about mercury in the teeth, she laughed it off and said it's being made too much of, that she had a whole mouthful of amalgam fillings. So it just got filled normally and I don't even think the asst., had that thing in my mouth enough to take away all the saliva, I felt it backing up in my throat that I had to swallow three times. I woke up this morning with part of my right hand numb...like when your hand falls asleep and it's starting to go into the pins & needle stage but hasn't really started yet. This is now how my pinky finger and finger next to it, part of my hand and wrist feel. I'm wondering if there is a connection.

I would have a consult with a biologically-trained dentist to see what they have to say. If you choose to have it removed, I'd make sure to do some detox ahead of time such as castor oil packs, dry brushing and cleaning up your diet as much as possible for a month or two before having it removed.

Thank you. This is the most informative article I've read on what the patient will need to do. As a former dental assistant 30 years ago, I not only have many amalgams, but daily exposure in the opertory that was not known to be dangerous back then. My health has steadily declined to a very bad state. While I'm saving for all the dental work I'll need to do, I am working on improving lymph quality and circulation. Right now, I would not be able to survive detox. Mercury is now suspected to play a role in those struggling with failing detox pathways and maybe connected to MTHFR. Carrie, do you have any information that confirms this?

It's very wise to make sure you're well enough to be able to detox afterwards, so I'm glad you've thought that through. I've never read anywhere that mercury could close the detox pathways, but I do know that MTHFR does play a role in how the body detoxes. To help open detox pathways, first one must make sure their gut health is in good shape (no leaky gut, etc.) and then treatments such as castor oil packs, near infrared saunas, and dry brushing for several months is a good way to help decongest the body and open the pathways. We also use some homeopathic remedies at our office that are really helpful to help decongest the liver and other detox organs. I used them in my recovery, and found them very helpful. For MTHFR, it's very important to get the right nutrient support so the body can properly detox. The best resource to understand the different MTHFR mutations and how the effect the body is: http://mthfr.net/ - Dr. Lynch is brilliant when it comes to this!

Cilantro has long been known for its toxic metal chelating properties and can be safely used in detoxing after amalgam removal when combined with the gemmotherapy Populus Nigra (aka Black Poplar). Populus Nigra assists in transporting toxins, including heavy metals and chemicals, across the blood brain barrier. Populus Nigra accomplishes this through the action of the enzyme phytochlatin synthase. This enzyme polymerizes sulfur-rich glutathione into phytochelatins, which bind strongly to mercury, cadmium and arsenic. The beauty of using cilantro and Populus Nigra is that they do not deplete the body of essential nutrients. At the same time, we include Original Quinton Isotonic or Hypertonic sea minerals to ensure remineralization of tissues that may have been depleted in the presence of mercury. Our detox protocol, combined with the foundational food plan is a healthy and effective way to detox the body from heavy metals.

I searched google images for "face rash" and clicked on your picture because your rash was similar to what I was experiencing (although mine wasn't as bad and my antibodies weren't a fourth of what your readings were) then I read your story. Since then I have purchased your cook book for myself and for my sister. I've been grain free and it has helped a lot! I'm about to get some more amalgams removed but my dentist wanted to know if there are any tests to show that my body absorbed mercury. Would it show up in the blood? I think I remember your theory that the mercury was absorbed by your thyroid, and it makes sense, but were any tests done to show this? In any case, I'm going to find a different dentist--one who performs the protocols you listed above. :). Thanks for documenting your journey and helping the rest of us who are finding our way!

I'm glad you've been taking steps with your diet to battle your disease. Great job! The body can go in phases during the healing process where sometimes you feel great, and other times the body is tired and needs to slow down. It doesn't always mean something is wrong, but of course, talk to you practitioner to see what they have to say since they know your full health history. It was about 1 1/2 years after my filling removal until we figured out my disease was rooted in heavy metal toxicity. I did many of the steps in this post along with a nutrient-dense diet and gentle detox (saunas, epsom salt baths, castor oil packs, etc.). It's hard to give you specific advice without knowing your full health history, so I recommend reading all of my health and detox articles (even the ones that talk about digestion, stress, etc. as these all pertain to healing the body) and see what steps you can start taking. And, if you'd like to book a Nutritional Therapy consult with me, you can give our office a call. I work with all clients long-distance, so you don't need to live in the area. I am having mercury amalgams removed. In order to allow my holistic biological dentist to use the proper materials on me, I had the bio reactivity blood test done. It is only done in one lab in the entire USA - Clifford Consulting & Research in Colorado Springs, CO. They test for over 18,000 dental and orthotic materials. Thank goodness I did it because as it turns out, I have not only problems and reactions to mercury, but also some of the ‘safe’ non-amalgam materials as well as almost all metals, including gold. As well I reacted to porcelain, stainless steel and some of the anesthesia (lidocaine) and quite a number of ‘safe’ materials. I highly recommend getting the test if you are removing amalgams. In my case, I lost my voice for over 5 months - my vocal chords froze. I lost all sensation from my knees down and could barely walk. I was told I had cancer, then MS. Turns out that symptoms for MS are very similar to those for MS. I have one more amalgam to remove. I have severe fatigue, have gained 10 pounds I can’t loose and some digestive issues. I suspect My thyroid and adrenals need help. I did not have cancer or MS. This is a great post

Hi I got a mercury filling around 10 years ago and around a year later got hyperthyroidism which I needed surgery for. I'm wondering now if it was linked. I went to a dentist to have my fillings replaced with the white ones and he said I'm better off leaving it as it's close to the nerve and that after 10 years the mercury in the filling wouldn't affect me anymore . Is that true ?

Mercury off-gasses all throughout the day, so if someone has an amalgam filling in their mouth, they are being exposed to mercury vapors daily. I would find a biologically-trained dentist to talk to about your situation.

I went to a DR. Hanson in Calif about 6/7 years ago and had Many OF THOSE MERCURY fillings removed, When I first got there Iwas given a book written by Hanson to read OMG! I had NO IDEA of the important role our teeth play in our general BODY health! I was getting pains in my hands and arms and feet.. and my doctors here thought Arthritus, ETC.. so I finally took the advice of my hollistic doctor here in the St; Louis area,,,, and had them removed ...in Calif.. because at tht time, I could not find a dentist here who seem to have the precautions to do the job correctly! aFTER ABOUT 4 MO all pains DISAPPEARED... and though I did detox, now that I am older, I wonder if my new pains and aches are related to residue mercury?

I'm so happy to have found your site. I've slowly and gently been opening up my detox pathways due to the worst anti-depressant withdrawal , and overburdened thyroid/body. Currently, I'm doing Epsom salt baths, sunbathing, dry brushing, and I'm currently looking into Sauna, and now just purchased castor oil/packs. I have quite a bit of amalgam in my mouth (from childhood), and root canals (adulthood), so taking my oral health is a top priority (giving myself a few months to open detox pathways). I'm sure some of the work I have done made me sick...but I just thought it was anxiety/my body falling apart. Can you recommend what I can do safely with the amalgams in my mouth...is oil pulling safe, toothpaste recommendations, don't eat hot foods, etc?

Amazing article! I took my wife to a biological dentist in NYC. Dr. Balica took all the necessary precautions and then some. I highly recommend anyone in the NYC area to pay her a visit. My wife is now on a careful detox program similar to the one here available. Slowly recovering and detoxing after 6 amalgams removed. Only regret is we waited 10 years to do it because of lack of knowledge and seriousness of this problem. Great article Carrie!

Hi- so thankful for all of your information. Wondering if you have heard of longer term issues after flu shots due to the mercury in them? I am in healthcare and was mandated to take the flu shot starting a few years back. Just now starting to think through why I have so many joint/body aches over the past few years. Just wondering if there could be a link to the mercury in those?? I do have a few fillings I have had since childhood so will check into getting those removed. Thanks!

Yes, problems can occur from the exposure to mercury in the flu shot. If you are mandated, then the mist could be a better option to reduce the mercury exposure.
