Did you know that many of the chemicals in skin care products like lotion, make-up, and deodorant can find their way into your bloodstream? I think it’s important to give just as much attention to what we put on our bodies as to what we eat. Many lotions include one or more of the following ingredients: parabens (chemicals that can mimic estrogen in our bodies and interfere with normal hormone function), mineral oil (a petroleum-based product), and citric acid (generally made from genetically modified corn) – just to name a few.
A good organic lotion can be a tricky thing to find. The problem is, a lotion can be labeled “organic” while only including some organic ingredients. So what do I do? Turn the bottle around and start reading. In my opinion, if you can’t pronounce it, you probably shouldn’t be putting it on your skin. I’ve only touched the surface of the issue, but believe it’s an important topic to look into. My favorite resource about skin care and health is Dying to Look Good. It’s a small book giving good information about what’s really in our cosmetics, toiletries, and personal care products. It includes a wonderful list of recommended brands, too.
The pictures above show a few of my recent favorite lotion finds. Dr. Bronner’s organic lotions sink into the skin quickly and come in all sorts of natural scents. Another favorite is Zum Body lotion. Their lotions are thick, but also soak in quickly. I also like to keep lotion in my purse, but don’t appreciate the leaking that can happen. So my favorite for travel or to carry with me are these cute little tins of Badger body moisturizer. They smell great and heal even the driest hands.
