Natural Insect Repellent

I’m getting the kids ready for summer camp and I came across two new natural insect repellents that I couldn’t wait to share with you.

The first is Badger Anti-Bug Spray. It has a pleasant aroma and does a great job keeping the bugs at bay. The second is from a company called Loving Naturals. I discovered them last week and am in love with all of their products. They carry a great “deet free” insect repellent as well as organic lotions, soaps, bubble bath, and sunscreen.

    I have a question about your research into insect repellents. I have found EWG's site to be very valuable but it's difficult to find information about how well these products actually work. For example, if you were going to a tropical region where mosquitos might carry dengue fever, do you feel these products would give you enough protection? I recently travelled to such a place and opted to use a product containing deet, (and hating every second of it), because I just could not find enough information about the effectiveness of the natural products. Do you have a resource you could recommend?

    I was looking for a natural bug repellent - but for my cat. He is highly allergic to mosquito bites. Cats cannot have any type of Permethrins (which are in most repellents) - they can only withstand pyrethrins (big difference between the two) so finding one was really difficult. Try the all natural solution from Pet Naturals of Vermont. Their PROTECT Natural repellent spray is safe for cats, dogs and horses. Bonus? It is made with lemongrass, sesame and cinnamon oils, so the scent is lovely - and it works! (Not sure if it is certified organic though.)

    I've personally tried Repel Natural, which is also "deet free," and liked it, especially since it smells so much better than others I've used. But I like the idea of the organic bug repellent too! I do have one question for you though- Do you know if either of these are very effective when the user is sweaty? I know my kids just love running around so much, but reapplying all the time is such a bother. Either way, I'm sure they would love the Badger Anti-Bug just for the can!
