Essential Oils for Thyroid Support

I wish I’d known about the benefits of essential oils for the thyroid many years ago when I was struggling with Hashimoto’s, and how they could help support not only my thyroid but the entire endocrine system.

Essential oils for thyroid support - Essential oils help keep the body in homeostasis and work towards restoring and maintaining balance.

Therapeutic-grade oils are specially distilled from plants cultivated organically or grown wild in a clean environment. Pharmaceuticals have their place, and many who need thyroid support need to be on medications, but there are also natural options to consider.

Essential oils help keep the body in homeostasis and work towards restoring and maintaining balance. I think we can agree that all of us who need thyroid support could use a bit more balance in our lives!

Here are some essential oils for thyroid support:

  1. Clove Oil – this oil has an antioxidant (ORAC) score of over 1,000,000! So, this is definitely an oil you’ll want to consider for supporting your entire body. Clove is also high in phenols (about 80%). “Phenols clean the receptor sites of the cells. Without clean receptor sites, cells cannot communicate and the body malfunctions, resulting in sickness.” – Dr. David Stewart
  2. Frankincense Oil – frankincense is the mother of all oils and it’s fantastic for healthy cell support. Frankincense is high in Monoterpenes which help reprogram miswritten information in cellular memory.
  3. Myrrh Oil – this oil has been used for thousands of years and can help reduce stress and support the thyroid. Myrrh is rich in Sesquiterpenes (around 60%) which can help “erase or deprogram miswritten codes in cellular memory”.
  4. Lemongrass Oil – this is a great oil to use to support the thyroid – again, helping the body achieve balance.
  5. Basil – basil helps support the adrenal glands. When the body needs thyroid support, it usually also needs adrenal support, so it’s a good idea to use this oil on a regular basis to support the adrenal glands.
  6. Peppermint – peppermint can help you feel more alert, and support the body when it feels fatigued. It also helps support the thyroid.
  7. Marjoram – marjoram supports the spleen. The spleen is an important organ in the immune system producing the white blood cells that fight synthesized antibodies. This oil can be a good oil to help support healthy antibody levels.

Essential oils for thyroid support - Essential oils help keep the body in homeostasis and work towards restoring and maintaining balance.

Here are some of my favorite ways to use these oils for thyroid support:

1. I rub a drop of myrrh oil over my thyroid area each day. The smell is a bit strong, but it wears off quickly.
2. A drop or two basil oil rubbed on the adrenals each morning is a great way to support the system! The adrenal glands are located on either side of your back, just below each rib cage.
3. A drop or two of marjoram can be rubbed over the spleen for antibody support.

Essential oils for thyroid support - Essential oils help keep the body in homeostasis and work towards restoring and maintaining balance.
Here’s the Thyroid Blend Recipe that I use 2x daily on my feet:

10 drops frankincense
10 drops clove
10 drops myrrh
10 drops lemongrass
10 drops basil
10 drops marjoram

I put all of these oils in a 10ml glass roller ball and top it off with fractionated coconut oil (this kind of coconut oil soaks into the skin quickly and stays liquid at colder temperatures).

I personally use doTERRA essential oils for my thyroid blend. If you’re not comfortable using 20 drops of each, you can lower the amount to 10 or 5 drops of each. This is the blend that I personally use and have seen great success with.

FYI - Peppermint oil is great for those of us needing hormone balance later in life, too.

Odd with such good advice you would advocate for an essential oil company that doesn't have any control over the seed selection (GMO?), harvesting practices, or distillation & bottling. Doterra buys oils from brokers. Good advice, poor oil advocacy xx

doTERRA doesn't buy from brokers, but works directly with the farmers to ensure harvesting practices, purity, distillation, bottling, etc. They also have all of their 3rd-party purity reports online for anyone to see. They are the brand that I use for me and my family and have seen great results.

Thank you, for your use of Doterra and their co-impact sourcing. Unless someone has taken the time to learn they just assume Doterra does it just like everyone else. The last time I heard anything we were at 96% exclusive production around the world. I can't think of a better company to support. That being said, thank you for your suggestions for essential oils to use for thyroid health. I am prone to goiters and will start using myrrh today to help. I have all of the items for the thyroid roller blend and will start that, too.

Point of clarification: doTERRA does not do outside third-party testing; while they do publish batch test reports online (which is not widely known or easily found), their testing is all internal, based on their self-developed CPTG system. Having said that, I do use some doTERRA oils and really appreciate their co-impact sourcing initiatives.

doTERRA is the brand I use for me and my family and have found them to be very helpful. I did use an affiliate link, as I do for most products I recommend because I can't possibly run my business and provide a wealth of free information without making money. Saying that I like doTERRA oils is the same as me telling my readers that Bob's Red Mill is my favorite brand of coconut flour, or Thrive Market is my favorite place to purchase foods at a lesser price online. I understand you don't like the free information I shared in this post, but there's really no need to attack my character. No one at doTERRA has taken advantage of me. They are honestly my favorite brand.

Have you tried doTERRA frankincense? Many times when one has an allergic reaction to an essential oil it's because it's not a completely pure oil (even thought the label says 100% pure). Just curious. If you used doTERRA Frankincense and still had issues, then I'd use the rest of the oils and recommend using 1 drop of Zendocrine over the liver 2x a day. Reactions to other oils or foods (when you don't have a documented allergy from the doctor) are often from liver congestion. So, Zendocrine, along with castor oil packs can help a lot!

This is also a good blend for an overactive thyroid. For an overactive thyroid, it's very important to focus on the health of the adrenals, and being in a "para-sympathetic" state. Here's a post where I explain what that means. :) https://deliciouslyorganic.net/how-to-improve-digestion-naturally/

As I mentioned in the post, I wish I'd known about the benefits of essential oils when I was really struggling. I've seen them make huge improvements in my health since I've been using them and wish I'd been able to start using them years ago! :) You can use them any time of day that works best for you. I like to apply them in the morning and at night. For more info about thyroid support, you should check out the book, "The Thyroid Cure" and also www.thyroidpharmacist.com (both of them have fantastic info for their email subscribers...I highly recommend signing up for both of their lists!).

Therapeutic grade oils are perfectly safe to use directly on the skin. I recently learned that there are 2 schools of thought. The British School of Aromatherapy emphasizes using only diluted oils and also frowns upon taking them orally. All of their research is based on studying food grade or perfume grade oils. So, their research is correct, but only when talking about food or perfume grade. I prescribe to the French School method which was created by MDs who rely on scientific research with people using therapeutic grade essential oils. I only believe in internalizing therapeutic grade oils - not perfume or food grade which is what is most often sold in health food or grocery stores.

30 drops of each of these oils is to put in a roller ball. So, after you combine all of the oils together in the roller ball, you top it off with fractionated coconut oil and then rub a little on your feet a couple times a day. Where on the feet is it best to put the oil? And is it safe to put that amount of concentration of oils (10 drops of each in 10 ml bottle with carrier oil) on an infant's foot? My 4 month old has Down Syndrome and I want to give him as much Thyroid support as I can.

I've read in various resources that lemongrass oils should be diluted to <1% when applied topically. Your recipe has a 5% dilution for lemongrass. Can you comment if there is any irritation or how you decided to use that dilution rate? Thank you :)

I studied various chemical analyses of essential oils to come up with this dilution and combination of oils. I've never heard that lemongrass should be diluted to <1%, and have never had anyone tell me they had any issues by putting it on the bottoms of their feet. Some of my friends who use this blend also put it directly on the thyroid without any issues, but my skin is sensitive and I don't do well with more potent oils on my face or neck. So, I always tell people to apply to the feet first and then to do a little test to see if their skin is sensitive to the other oils. I hope that helps!

If you haven't already taken my online class about oils for thyroid support, I highly recommend you take it as I think it will help you understand a bit more about how these oils work to support the thyroid. Your feet are very porous and when you put oils on the feet, they will travel to the cells where they are needed in the body within 30 seconds. If your thyroid is swollen, I suggest not putting any oils directly on your thyroid and just putting them on your feet, the back of the neck or the spine.

I'm a reflexologist. The feet have points that correlate to every system in the body. Stimulating these points will affect the rest of the body. I would put the oils on the thyroid areas of the feet, which is a curve just under and around the big toe and "knuckle". Massage it in with a bit of pressure. Feels great too!

I was wondering how often you need to replenish your roller bottle. With 30 drops of each oil and 250 drops in a 15ml bottle you would get 8+ refills. I am trying to figure out how much this would cast monthly. My daughter just started on the medication but I am researching alternatives for her. I am also new to DoTerra and the oils you mentioned would cost $237. Hi I have been on thyroid medication for years now. My friend made me a mixture of clove, lemongrass, peppermint, and myrrh. I'm not regular with using it as the smell effects my moms asthma. However recently I have been applying it at night before I go to bed (not sure if that's a good thing?!). My friend uses all doterra products with fractionated coconut oil. (The recipe she used is 10 drops clove, 10 drops myrrh, 10 drops peppermint, 5 drops lemongrass into a 10ml rollerball vial filled to the top with defractionated coconut oil) The mixture is a little intense for me so I have been rubbing it in my hands with some virgin raw coconut oil and applying it to my throat/chest (over my thyroid). But since I haven't been regularly applying it (topical mixture) I'm concerned about the shelf life. Do you know how long it will stay good?

But I can’t find any info online about what happens when the body is trying to get balanced, especially with Frankincense. Do you think this is normal? Should I stop the oil? I don't think this is a result of using frankincense, but of course, I don't know your full health history, so it's a bit hard to say. If you're dealing with severe anxiety, I would focus on taking steps to support the adrenals. And, adding progesterone to the mix can sometimes help in the beginning, but can often backfire and cause adrenal issues down the road, so it's possible the cream is affecting your adrenal health. Here is an article I wrote with 20 steps you can take to balance your adrenals: https://deliciouslyorganic.net/20-steps-heal-adrenal-fatigue/

Thank you for this wealth of information. For close to 18 years, I was treated by a traditional endocrinologist for what he diagnosed as Hypothyroidism. He had me on the same dose (Levoxyl 133 mcg) for 18 years and it never fluctuated her changed. I trusted his knowledge and never explored learning about the Thyroid and Pituitary gland function. It wasn't until I began experiencing menopause and turned to an Integrative practice for bio-idential Hormone replacement, that I learned that I in fact, did not have Hypothyroidism, but Hashimotos disease. The search for the right physician was quite a process, because I was searching for someone who had experience with Hashimoto, MTHFR, and BHRT. My FT3 and FT4 seem to stay at the normal, but low side. My THS has gone from low to off the charts. I believe due to a functional medical doctor that never could get me balanced. Finally, I am back with the doctor that seems to be the most knowledgable. She tracks everything from Vit. B, D, cholesterol, lipids, hormone balance (progesterone/estrogen, as well as my thyroid. Your website is amazing, and trust me.... I know from a long, researched journey that you are right on all of the information you provide here at Deliciously Organic. I found you this morning, when searching for natural remedies for lowering TSH through diet. I joined your meal plan and am waiting for instructions on viewing meal plans. I am also a discount buyer of DoTERRA for many years now. Interestingly, I always forget about how implementing essential oils can make such a huge difference. After reading this post this morning, I jumped over to my oil boxes and had every single one of the oils that you suggested and am so excited to start using them daily. Thank you for caring for others by sharing your journey and expertise. Very Kindest Regards, Debbie

I too am wondering about I found a similar one but it uses 9 drops total in the 10 ml roller. Yours uses 120! Can you help me understand why? I thought I read somewhere that you shouldn't use more than 15 drops per 10ml carrier oil, but I'm finding a lot of recipes that call for much more, like yours, and I'm afraid to over do it. Thank you

I feel comfortable using oils without dilution, so a blend that contains a lot of drops that I use a few swipes of is ok with me. But if you're not comfortable with that dilution, you can reduce it.
