How to Choose a Natural Toothpaste

Natural toothpaste. This is a tricky one. As I understand it, a lack of FDA guidance means almost any toothpaste can label itself “natural.”  Nearly all toothpaste contain glycerin, a sticky substance added to keep the past from drying out. I’m not really a fan of glycerin, though (for further reading click here and here).

Have you ever noticed the “warning” on your tube of toothpaste telling you to not ingest the product? If I’m not supposed to swallow the product, why do I even want it in my mouth?

Honestly, I haven’t figured out all the answers but I’ve found a few products that make me feel better about my family’s oral hygiene. Here are a few of my favorites:

Eco-Dent Tooth Powder – This is a winner in our family. It tastes and behaves like the conventional toothpaste most of us are used to. Easy to travel with, too.

Tooth Soap – I know. It’s a little crazy, but I used this for years and it really works well. You buy the bar and grate it into flakes. Use one flake each time you brush.

Miessence – This one doesn’t contain fluoride, aluminium, artificial sweeteners or detergents.

What is your favorite natural toothpaste?

We use Perfect Prescription tooth soap. It's pre-shredded and comes in a few different flavors. It definitely took a few days to get used to, but it really wasn't that hard to switch. I had a 6-month checkup at the dentist a couple of months after we started using it and my teeth were great, so I'm sold on it. For the kids, we use Weleda.

The reason why they say not to ingest too much toothpaste is because of Fluoride toxicity, that's not to say that Fluoride is bad for you, just like anything, at high levels it can be toxic, but Fluoride is not a poison as many people would say, and it is one of the most important ways we're fighting tooth decay. The other toothpastes will put xylitol in it as their "protective mechanism" but the dosage of xylitol that is needed to protect your teeth are extremely high and are probably not met by brushing 2 times a day, and at that levels usually cause intestinal discomfort also because of the sugar alcohol.

We've been using the liquid tooth soap drops, but I think I'm going to give making my own a try after we finish our current bottles!

I really like Jason Seafresh toothpaste. The taste gets some getting used to for some, but I really like its minty, fresh taste. I've tried natural bristle toothbrushes too....but they have a horrible after taste and make me gag so I gave up. Any good reccomendations? Thanks! Gail

I don't have any recommendations for toothbrushes. If I find some good ones I'll let you know.

I get the all natural toothpaste they sell at Trader Joes, it has a nice authentic minty taste without the sugary aftertaste of most commercial toothpaste.

After reading Ramil Nagel's "Cure Tooth Decay" we have been brushing with pure sea salt for three + months. Contrary to what I had thought, it is not abrasive at all, and does not make you thirsty. It is the only thing that would keep my husband's teeth free of plague. I believe it is so stupidly simple and cheap that it is impossible to market and make money off of, that is the only reason why I have not heard of it before.

Wow! I've never heard of brushing with sea salt. I'll have to read about that. So interesting!

We use Tom's of Maine...our first product of organic nature. I am VERY interested in what you find out about brushing with sea salt. My dad always said rinsing with warm water and salt works for lots of things :-)
