The Best Protein Bars That are Actually Good for You

The Best Protein Bars That are actually goodfor you! II
Protein bars are all the rage, but unfortunately most of them contain unhealthy ingredients and are very high in sugars.

Here are some of the ingredients you’ll find in the most popular bars on the market today:
Grains – Oats, corn, rice and wheat that haven’t been properly prepared contain phytic acid, which is an enzyme inhibitor. The phytic acid robs minerals like iron, magnesium and zinc that your body needs in order to digest properly. This adds stress to the body and isn’t ideal when you’re trying to stay healthy.

Soy Protein Isolate – most of this soy is GMO, and hasn’t been properly prepared, leaving it full of phytic acid. These soy isoflavones can also damage the endocrine system.

High Fructose Corn Syrup – This is a highly processed sugar that causes insulin levels to spike and may contain contaminants – including mercury – that aren’t regulated or measured by the FDA.

Dextrose – this is a sugar usually derived from GMO corn. When you’re looking for protein, added sugar isn’t a bonus!

Natural Flavors – these are usually derived from GMO corn. They’re “natural” because they’re source material is something that can be eaten, even if those edible things get heavily processed in the lab to create the flavorings.

Nonfat Dry Milk – this ingredient has been linked to heart disease.

Whey Protein – this processed powder is a byproduct of cheese made from cow’s milk. It can cause headaches, inflammation, digestive issues, allergic reactions, kidney and liver issues and inflammation. As is always the case, it’s best to stick with real food.

This is just a short list, but as you can see, there aren’t many nutrient-dense ingredients listed!

When choosing a protein bar, I prefer to stick with real food.

Here are some of our favorites:

Epic Bar – These come in a variety of flavors, but our family favorites are Uncured Bacon and Beef, Bacon and Apple.

Chomp Stick – I always have one of these in my purse! We prefer the Classic flavor.

Paleo Valley Bars – My kids especially love these and they come in handy for afternoon athletic practices or road trips. They offer a 30% discount when you sign up for a subscription. That’s what I did because you can’t get them in stores and this way I always have some on hand!

I'm all for making my own, but when traveling or on the go, sometimes it's hard to make homemade protein bars. I often get asked which ones I use, so I thought it would be helpful to share the ones I've found to be clean, healthy and nutrient-dense. If you'd like to make something like this yourself, you should check out my Homemade Beef Jerky Recipe: https://deliciouslyorganic.net/homemade-beef-jerky-recipe/

I love the grass-fed beef bars/sticks and am thankful for these new suggestions. Especially looking forward to trying the Chomp Sticks and the Paleo Valley bars. I really enjoy the Bulletproof protein bars. Lots of healthy fats and I love having them after a workout.

When it comes to a protein bar, I prefer something that isn't sweet, so that's why I recommend homemade beef jerky, or one of the bars I recommend in the post. Maybe I'll come up with a homemade sugar-free meat/protein bar soon! :)

I'd add Gomacro bars to the list. The ingredients are pretty natural compared to others. Can't wait to try the Paleo Valley bars, but they are so tough to find!
