Organic Lotion

Did you know that many of the chemicals in skin care products like lotion, make-up, and deodorant can find their way into your bloodstream? I think it’s important to give just as much attention to what we put on our bodies as to what we eat. Many lotions include one or more of the following ingredients: parabens (chemicals that can mimic estrogen in our bodies and interfere with normal hormone function), mineral oil (a petroleum-based product), and citric acid (generally made from genetically modified corn) – just to name a few.

A good organic lotion can be a tricky thing to find. The problem is, a lotion can be labeled “organic” while only including some organic ingredients. So what do I do? Turn the bottle around and start reading. In my opinion, if you can’t pronounce it, you probably shouldn’t be putting it on your skin. I’ve only touched the surface of the issue, but believe it’s an important topic to look into. My favorite resource about skin care and health is Dying to Look Good. It’s a small book giving good information about what’s really in our cosmetics, toiletries, and personal care products. It includes a wonderful list of recommended brands, too.

The pictures above show a few of my recent favorite lotion finds. Dr. Bronner’s organic lotions sink into the skin quickly and come in all sorts of natural scents. Another favorite is Zum Body lotion. Their lotions are thick, but also soak in quickly. I also like to keep lotion in my purse, but don’t appreciate the leaking that can happen. So my favorite for travel or to carry with me are these cute little tins of Badger body moisturizer. They smell great and heal even the driest hands.

I've been making my own deodorant for a long time now. It's so easy, smells wonderful, and best of all it really works! 1 part baking soda, 1 part arrowroot powder, then add coconut oil to make it the texture you want. I put it into an old commercial deodorant container that I cleaned out. It's great!

Do you have a good recommendation for a kids' shampoo and conditioner?

My recent favorite for my kids is "Shea Moisture". It's sold at target. I have girls and we love the "sea kelp, argan oil, and shea butter" scent. It's about $10 a bottle and a little goes a long way. I also like to use "Liggetts" shampoo bars for them. They are about $7 a bar and last 6 weeks between 2 kids. It's very gentle, in fact if I had a baby that's the shampoo I'd use.

Carries, this is such a helpful post. That thick Badger balm would be great for Telluride.

Great post! I love using organic oil as moisturizer which cuts out all the fluff. I use vitamin E oil on my face, Weleda pregnancy oil and then fill in the rest with jojoba oil. I also gave up deodorant a while ago; instead I use baking soda. It can be drying so I use a layer of jojoba oil first. The baking soda eliminates odors but allows your skin to breathe. I've never been happy with conventional deodorant so if you are, this might not work for you. I agree about the purse leakage so I'll be on the look out for the Badger Balm moisturizer tins, I use some of their other products and love them! ~ GGG

I have normal-to-dry skin at any time of the year, in the night or in the morning and even under make-up. I use Made from Earth's Vitamin Enhanced Face Firming Serum. Its organic. It smells great too. In fact the delightful-but-not-overpowering scent is what attracted me to the Made from Earth product line in the first place, in addition of course to it being organic and paraben-free. This product has been reigning on the top of my list of facial moisturizers for a while now.
