Here’s some great recipes to make wholesome baby food.

“How would you feel if you only got puréed vegetables and fruit for a meal? You’d soon be whiny and cranky from low blood sugar and crying for food” – Sally Fallon. I love this quote – it’s something I never thought about when I was feeding my babies straight fruits and vegetable purées. Since then, I’ve learned that a high-fat diet is critical for growing babies. I think this idea is often missed when we’re learning how to feed little ones.
Mother’s milk is made up of 50-60% fat, over half of which is saturated fats with large doses of cholesterol. These fats are needed for the proper development and growth of your baby. “Experts agree that low-fat, low-cholesterol diets do not provide babies the basis for proper growth. Science supports that babies need most of their calories from fats in the first year, and U.S. governing agencies such as the FDA and AAP agree that babies should not be on any kind of fat-restrictive diet for at least the first 2 years.” Dr. Erlich
Homemade baby food is very easy to prepare; the key ingredient in every meal – whether you’re serving fruit, vegetables, or meats – should be healthy fats.
Here’s a list of healthy fats:
Coconut oil
Organic lard or tallow
Ghee
Duck Fat
Pastured Egg yolks (a fabulous first food for babies!)
Avocado
Organic, grass-fed butter
“Milk fats and animal fats give energy and also help children build muscle and bone. In addition, the animal fats provide vitamins A, D and K necessary for protein and mineral assimilation, normal growth and hormone production”. Sally Fallon
So if you’re feeding your baby sweet potatoes, mix in some ghee, coconut oil or butter to help that little body assimilate the fat-soluble vitamins. The same goes for fruits, even applesauce – add some fat. If you’re looking for some good recipes, I highly recommend these two books: The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby and Childcare and Super Nutrition.

What if you’re traveling, or don’t always have time to make homemade baby food? I suggest purchasing some organic baby purées then adding coconut oil to the mixture before serving it.
What about feeding babies grains, nuts and seeds? I thought the information from Sally Fallon’s baby and childcare book was very helpful on this topic. She suggests, “Grains, nuts and seeds should be the last foods introduced to babies. This food category has the most potential for causing digestive disturbances or allergies. Babies do not produce the needed enzymes to handle cereals, especially gluten-containing grains like wheat, before the age of one year. Even then, it is a common traditional practice to pre-digest grains by soaking them in water and a little yogurt or buttermilk overnight for up to twenty-four hours. This process jump-starts the enzymatic activity in the food and begins to breaking down some of the harder-to-digest components.” Fascinating!
I recently discovered a company called the Little Green Pouch that makes dishwasher-safe, freezer-safe reusable food pouches to help parents make smarter and healthier food choices for the whole family. The idea is to help us control the types of food we give to our children. The Little Green Pouch makes it convenient and easy to feed a baby homemade purées, yogurt or apple sauce – even on the go.
The pouches are great for traveling. I especially love the little spoon that can be attached at the end for little babies. Just squeeze the bag and out comes the food right onto the spoon! I really wish I’d had some of these when my girls were little. It would’ve made road trips, traveling or even a long day of errands so much more simple!
Little Green Pouch is kindly giving away a collection of their products to one lucky winner! Here’s what they’re giving away:
1 large starter kit
2 (four-packs) of the large 7-ounce pouches
1 funnel
1 baby bottle brush

PrintFruit or Vegetable Puree for Babies
You can use a variety of different fruits and vegetables for this recipe such as: apricots, peaches, carrots, squash, sweet potato, etc. Recipe adapted from Super Nutrition.
- Prep Time: 10
- Cook Time: 10
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: Makes about 1 1/2 cups
- Category: Main Dish
- Diet: Gluten Free
Ingredients
- 6 organic apples (cored, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces)
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil or ghee
- 2-4 tablespoons unsweetened coconut milk, mother's breast milk, or organic formula
Instructions
- Melt the coconut oil or ghee in a large sauté pan over medium-low heat. Swirl the pan to coat. Add the apples and cook, stirring occasionally until very soft, about 10 minutes.
- Pour apples into a blender and add 2 tablespoons of the milk of your choice. Puree until smooth (you may need to add another 1-2 tablespoons to thin out the puree until it’s the desired consistency). Cool completely. Spoon puree into an ice cube tray (I used a heart mold tray) and freeze. Once frozen, pop out the cubes and store in an airtight container in the freezer. Thaw individual cubes when you need a meal for your little one.

I have a 7 month old baby and am trying to introduce her to more foods, that have the right nutrition for her little growing body. Winning this would help so much!
The Little Green Pouches will be a big help with baby #4. It will be great to have fresh, homemade food in portable pouches while we are on the go. And I love that they are reusable!
I am so excited about these reusable pouches!! We are introducing solids and i love making our own food for our little one! What a great product to have reusable pouches!
3rd baby on the way….would love to try these pouches!
We live in the country. I always pack snacks and meals for my son. I have been using the disposable pouches, but have wanted to try some reusable pouches.
Thanks! Exactly what I have been looking for to make foods for my grandson!
i have a 5 month old and it’s about time to start making food in bulk to freeze for her. The pouches weren’t around for my last kids so I’m excited to try them out. I know they will make things so much easier!
Thanks so much for all the great info!
I had no idea about adding fat. We started with avocado and veggies and did fish early, but next time we’ll add fat!
I Love the ease that the pouch offers and I love the idea of making my own food instead of buying the pouches at the store.
In April I will have 3 kids under the age of 4. We go through the disposable pouches like crazy! It would be great to try some that are reusable, not to mention the variety of fun and healthy combinations you can create! Brilliant idea!
Would love to use these for on the go snacks
grand babies coming soon! This would be great.
I’ve been trying really hard to not rely on processed foods for my 3 kids. Having an on the go option for my youngest would be so helpful!
These would help get nutritious food into my little ones, as well as save huge amounts of money on travel friendly snacks.
With 3 under 3 it would defiantly simplify my life!
Would love this for my little one!
Any help to feed my twins will be needed!
I pureed a lot of food for my babies and wished I had known then….21 yrs ago…about Sally Fallon. Didn’t find her until they were adolescents.
I have two granddaughters – one is just starting on solids and the other who is a very picky eater! Love this!
Would love it for on the go snacks!
Love it
I’ve never thought of adding fat to the purees, and this is our third baby. Even my older children love to get the applesauce in the pouches at the grocery store, and this product would be way more economical, plus the value of being in control of the ingredients.
Carrie –
Are there any allergy concerns with using coconut oil for babies? I have a son that is allergic to peanuts, so allergy concerns are a big deal to me!
I couldn’t find any reference to allergy concerns in the two books I reference in the post. Coconut is a fruit, not a legume/nut (you probably know that, but many think it’s a nut). 🙂 You could try rubbing just a little on his belly or inner thigh to see if he has a reaction before serving any to him. Or, you could use ghee and/or butter until he’s a bit older if you’re nervous he might have an allergy.
These would be great for on the go snacks!
So convenient!!! Used with my son from 6 months onwards! He is now two and still loves his “squishies” (my way to get awesome veggies into him!)
love making homemade baby food – this makes it so easy when you’re on the go 🙂
great giveaway
We travel a lot now that we have a baby to visit family. These would be great for that, instead of glass jars.
We are expecting our first child in July and would love to be able to take nutrient-dense baby food on the go!
I never thought about fat in my baby’s diet.
I loved making organic baby food for my last little one, looking forward to it again this time around. Love the reusable pouch idea!
Oh man these would help out with baby #1 so much! So helpful!
We are on the go a lot so it would be really wonderful to be able to take food with us easily for our toddler and not use disposable pouches all the time!
Never though about no fat in the fruit and vegtables would have saved many unhappy tummies
My niece-in-love has been making baby formula (Sally Fallon recipe) for my great niece since she weened her at one year. She even figured out that it is more cost effective and certainly much healthier to make formula than to buy the store bought crud. Anyway, I know with baby number two on the way she would LOVE to have these little green pouches.
My baby girl would love these on the go.
The Little Green Pouch will help me to provide my eight month old daughter with delicious and nutritious snacks.
I was just telling my husband that the downside to the organic baby food pouches is that they don’t have salt or much from animal derived foods. I added that I would like to have some washable pouches to add to my kiddo’s food.
This is such great information! Thank you so much!!
I love using these for my daughter! I would love a full set, since I only have a couple.
These will be awesome for errands and trips to Grammys!
I would love to use these Little Green Pouches for my 6 month old starting solids!
These would be a life saver for lunches. Then I could make my own blends of fruits and veggies to send with my children.
These pouches look fabulous for on the go snacking! We make a year supply or unsweetened applesauce each June with az apples. It would be a great change up for my kids to get a different presentation;)
My little guy has food allergies and some sensitivities so I make everything for him from scratch and I would love to have an easier way of feeding him when we’re out and about.
My little one is just starting solids. I’d love to have these pouches in my diaper bag!
For the grand babies!
I have an 11 month old who is allergic to dairy and sensitive to legumes (peas, beans, soy, etc.). Finding prepared foods in pouches for her requires a lot of attention and label reading. I’d love to be able to package her homemade foods like this!
Would love to win this for my daughter-in-law
Thank you for the give away
I prefer to make my own baby food as much as possible so Little Green Pouches would be perfect
I would love this for my grandson. My daughter in law and I were just discussing making baby food. This would work really well.
I’m pregnant with baby #3 so these would be great to have!!
LOVE this! I made baby food for my boys and didn’t have this important information about adding healthy fats. I’m so glad you’re helping to spread the word, Carrie, and what a good friend you are too! I love the pictures – your friend’s little girl is such a doll!
I’d love some little green pouches to use for on the go food for my 8 month old.
Wow! How handy! Thank you for letting us know about the products. 🙂
winning would help me prepare for my little lady who will be trying her first foods in just a few months! So looking forward to making my own healthy foods for her. Great article! Flippers crossed as it would be amazing to win these.
By feeding them more naturally.
The little green pouches are a great idea!

I’d love these to help my sister make some healthy snacks for my little nephew!
My daughter-in-law works hard to prepare home-made meals for our 11-month old grandson. When I saw the email, from Carrie Vitt, about “Wholesome Baby Food…”, I was naturally drawn to read more – which brought me to this page. I’m forwarding the email to my daughter-in-law to help provide her with more tips on making food for the baby. Thanks for the information!!
With 4 kids these pouches would be so great for their school lunches!M
I would love these for baby 4!
These would be so handy for homemade baby food, on the go. Thanks for the tips about adding healthy fats to purees.
Can’t wait to try them!
Im always looking for ways to feed my little ones better and this seems like a great idea! This would be s blessing to our family right now!
I definitely plan on making my little one’s food, with will definitely help when we are on the go.
Oh this is so timely for my family! We are expecting number 4 and have only recently (in the last 2 years) transitioned to a whole foods diet so I’m relearning everything baby!! Cannot wait to try this recipe. Love adding fat to the veggies and fruits. Makes complete sense. Thank you!
I’ve been wanting these for my 8 month old!!
would love to try these pouches for trips to grandma’s house.
Going to be a grandma for the first time. The Little Green Pouch would be a great way to make and bring homemade baby food.
This pouch would help me get my daughter to drink smoothies! When I buy those disposable smoothie pouches she drinks it up and loves it. But if I give her a smoothie in a glass and she can SEE what she is drinking she turns away from it. 🙂
I’m due with my 3rd in May, I’ve always made my own food, but would love an alternative for when I’m on the go or running short on time. Looks fantastic!
I have a niece or nephew coming later this year and their momma would love this and so would their older brother. For my sister. thanks
I need to try those little pouches. So handy!
I love this! I can feed my grandson with these.
I have an 8.5 month old and we travel a lot to see family. These pouches would be great to take for food on the go!
I’ve got 15 month-old twin boys that LOVE their bread, but I’ve only recently started giving them real butter. I may start mixing their oatmeal with coconut oil, and putting it in the Little Green Pouches makes taking them on the go so easy!
My 7-month-old is just getting the hang of eating solids and I am doing my best to only feed him homemade, wholesome foods. We take LOTS of road trips, and these pouches would be wonderful for traveling!
These pouches would be fabulous for hiking!
These look super convenient!
Love the pouches for my toddler! I haven’t tried the green pouch brand so I really hope I win! 🙂

The little green pouches will help me make sure that my little one still has wholesome and nutritious food when we are out and about!
I like this for our own homemade, home fresh options for baby. Plus – we can use it for salad dressing on the go!
I have a 3 month old!!! Would love to try.
I pinned the book and love the idea of the food pouches for baby #3! Thank you for putting the time in to post about baby nutrition. Sooo important to all us Mommas with little ones! 😉 I wish I had thought to add healthy fats to my first 2 babie’s diets. They ate all my own organic fruits and veggies purees…but I never would have thought to add the fats in. Now I will for our next!
Hugs,
Gail
I would greatly benefit from the little green pouches for my 7 month old. I started her with avocado, and now I’m looking to expand her veggie intake. She’s my first baby, and I’m committed to feeding her real food. Thank you for this post!! Great info 🙂
So happy to see you reference Super Nutrition for Babies! We used this book with my little dude and are so glad we did! People thought we were strange when we fed him beef liver and egg yolks as his first foods, but he has grown up healthy and strong! It is an excellent book, and I love reading your blog which also has so much great information! Nutrition is our key to health and you demostrate this perfectly!
Baby #9 is getting closer to food introduction tion. What a wonderful way to store yummy food for baby.
My son eats at his own pace and quicker when eating from a pouch. I am concerned about ingredients in store bought pouches. I never thought about making my own pouches. The set is more economical and healthier for my family. Thank you for the chance to win. And thanks for the great nutritional book recommendations! Will def check em out. Thx!
Just started making baby food for our granddaughter — So much fun!! Thanks for the tidbits, I never would have thought to put some healthy oils in the fruits.
